How Often Should You Service Your Mobility Scooter?
An electric mobility scooter is just like any other motorised vehicle in that it is important to have it serviced regularly to keep it operating at peak performance. Whether you use it on a day-to-day basis or only occasionally, the mass of moving parts means that key components are liable to deteriorate over time. With regular servicing, you can ensure that any issues are spotted ahead of time, before they become serious problems.
In this article, we will talk about the importance of having your mobility scooter serviced and how it can benefit you and your riding experience.
What is included in a mobility scooter service?
When you bring your scooter in to be serviced, it will receive a full inspection from one of our trained and experienced engineers. They will take a look at all key components, replacing any parts that are worn or otherwise damaged. They will also check your scooter’s battery and fluid levels, tyre pressure, and tread depth, and tighten up any parts that may have loosened with use.
Why is a mobility scooter servicing so important?
Most mobility scooters are built to last and will give you decades of suitable service with the right care and attention. That includes regular mobility scooter servicing. Our detailed service inspections ensure that all your scooter’s component parts are in good working order. If we spot evidence of wear and tear, corrosion, or deterioration, we can rectify right away instead of waiting for the inevitable to occur.
Even little things like checking the tyre pressure or topping up your scooter’s fluids can make your driving experience that much more comfortable. Quite aside from anything else, noticing the faults early on usually means a cheaper and quicker solution. If left to their own devices, small issues have a habit of becoming major problems. Regular servicing can prevent that from happening.
How often should I have my mobility scooter serviced?
This can depend on a variety of factors, from the age and condition of your scooter to how often and for how long you use it. Auxiliary factors such as your scooter’s insurance policy might also have a role to play.
We usually recommend that anybody who uses their mobility scooter on a day-to-day basis should have their machine serviced annually. If you drive it less than that, a longer service schedule might be in order—anywhere from 18 months to three years should do. Much longer than that, and you run the risk of a major fault appearing out of the blue.
Sometimes the user’s manual that came with your scooter might give the manufacturer’s own servicing recommendations. You can choose to accept or ignore their guidance, but be warned: you may invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty if you fail to keep your scooter well maintained.
This is also true of insurers. While you might get a good deal on your cover due to your scooter’s slow speed, be sure to read the policy in detail. Some insurers may refuse to pay out (or, at least, pay out in full) if you cannot provide them with an up-to-date service record.
